AGE OF MAN IN FOUR YUGAS

The Age of Man in Four Yugas: A Decline in Lifespan & Wisdom

Understanding the Yuga Cycles in Hindu Mythology

According to Hindu mythology, time is divided into four great ages known as Yugas, each with distinct characteristics. These are:

  1. Satya Yuga – The Golden Age of Truth and Purity
  2. Treta Yuga – The Age of Righteousness with a Gradual Decline
  3. Dwapara Yuga – The Age of Doubt and Conflicts
  4. Kali Yuga – The Age of Darkness and Corruption

Each Yuga sees a gradual decline in dharma (righteousness), wisdom, knowledge, physical and mental strength, and most importantly, the lifespan of human beings.

Duration of the Four Yugas

As per Hindu scriptures like the Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Purana, and Manusmriti, the duration of each Yuga is based on a fixed ratio:

  • Satya Yuga1,728,000 years (4 × 432,000 years)
  • Treta Yuga1,296,000 years (3 × 432,000 years)
  • Dwapara Yuga864,000 years (2 × 432,000 years)
  • Kali Yuga432,000 years (1 × 432,000 years)

According to scriptures, Kali Yuga began in 3102 BCE, meaning over 5,000 years of Kali Yuga have already passed.

Life span in Satya Yuga

Human Lifespan Across the Four Yugas

The decline of human capability, wisdom, and morality is directly proportional to the lifespan and physical strength in each Yuga.

YugaAverage Human LifespanHeight of Humans
Satya Yuga100,000 years32 feet
Treta Yuga10,000 years21 feet
Dwapara Yuga1,000 years12 feet
Kali Yuga100 years (declining)5-6 feet (further decreasing)

Life Span at end of Kali yuga

What Happens at the End of Kali Yuga?

Ancient Hindu scriptures like the Bhagavata Purana and Garuda Purana describe that at the end of Kali Yuga, humans will:

  • Have an average lifespan of only 12 years
  • Shrink in height to just 1 foot
  • Suffer from extreme famine, diseases, and conflicts
  • Live in a state of moral and ethical decay

It is believed that Lord Kalki, the tenth avatar of Vishnu, will appear at the end of Kali Yuga to destroy evil, restore dharma, and begin a new Satya Yuga.

Proof of Longer Lifespans in Ramayana & Mahabharata

Ancient Hindu texts support the claim of extended lifespans during earlier Yugas:

  1. Bhisma’s Age in Mahabharata

    • Bhishma Pitamaha lived through four generations of the Kuru dynasty, showcasing the long lifespans in Dwapara Yuga.
  2. Rama’s Exile in Ramayana

    • Lord Rama, during his 14 years of exile, traveled vast distances and fought multiple battles.
    • Even in battle, warriors displayed superhuman endurance and strength, which suggests longer lifespans and physical superiority.
  3. Longevity of Sages and Rishis

    • Many rishis and sages from previous Yugas like Vashishta, Vishwamitra, and Durvasa lived for thousands of years.
    • Even in Kali Yuga, sages like Ashwatthama, Vibhishana, and Parashurama are believed to be alive, as they were granted immortality (Chiranjivi status).

How Kali Yuga is Affecting Human Lifespan Today

According to the Vedas and Puranas, the lifespan of humans continues to decline due to:

Loss of Dharma: Greed, corruption, and lack of moral values
Decline in Physical Strength: Unhealthy lifestyles, pollution, and diseases
Mental Weakness: Increase in stress, depression, and loss of wisdom
Spiritual Ignorance: Disconnection from traditional knowledge and dharma

Scientists have also noticed that human lifespans are reducing due to modern diseases, stress, and genetic decline, indirectly supporting the ancient predictions of Kali Yuga.

Final Thoughts: Are We Nearing the End of Kali Yuga?

While it may seem like an exaggeration, ancient Hindu texts have accurately predicted various scientific and astronomical events. The gradual decline in human height, lifespan, and moral values aligns with the predictions in Mahabharata, Ramayana, and Puranas.

However, Hinduism also teaches that dharma (righteousness) can slow the decline of Kali Yuga. By following a spiritual and ethical path, humans can lead a healthier and more meaningful life, even in the Age of Darkness.
